A few years ago I did a school speech on slavery.
The things I learnt have stuck with me since.
Many people believe slavery is a thing of the past.
In reality there are over 27 Million slaves in the world today.
Over half of those are children.
They work in the worst conditions imaginable and live under constant abuse with no hope for freedom. Most die still in bondage.
The Ivory Coast in Africa is one of the worst places for slavery.
Children are beaten and forced to work in horrific environments.
This is also where most of our cocoa comes from.
Human trafficking is the fastest growing area of slavery.
Woman from around the world are kidnapped or tricked into the sex industry.
The A21 campaign was started by Christine Caine and helps woman in the sex industry gain freedom and restoration.
What can we do when the problem is so big?
"All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing"
-Edmund Burke
So what can we do?
We can pray, we can donate, we can support campaigns like A21.
We can open people's eyes to the modern day slave trade.
We are called to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.
William Wilberforce addressed the House of Parliament prior to its members voting on his Abolition Bill in 1789, and said
"You may choose to look the other way but you can never again say you did not know."
